Ready, Set, Learn:
Ready Set Learn
Ready Set Learn is an early childhood project sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Children & Family Development and the Ministry of Health. Resources have been provided to support parents as they prepare their preschool children for school.
Roy Wilcox School, along with the other elementary schools in our community, participated in two community events to support parents and prepare children for kindergarten.
Kindergarten Round-Up held on April 4th, 2007 was our first event. The Health Unit and Coast Mountain School District partnered for this immunization event that offered families information about school readiness. All participants received an information package which also included a story book, crayons, scissors, paper and glue.
Ready Set Learn Three Year Old Fair held on May 8th, 2007 was our second event. Children had a chance to participate in crafts, play activities, stories and lunch while parents learned about childhood milestones. All participants received an information package that included two storybooks, finger crayons, a pad of paper, bubbles and play dough.
Kindergarten Orientations were held June 7th at Roy Wilcox School. This Ready Set Learn event was our first PALS (Parents as Literacy Supporters) session. The children who are registered for our 2007-2008 kindergarten classes were invited to visit the kindergarten class for some songs, stories, craft, snack and play activities. Their parents participated in an information session with a focus on "The Importance of Play". All participants went home with a sandbucket full of activities including a new storybook, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, picture frame, bag of fun foam shapes and information package.
