P.A.L.S. Program

Parents As Literacy Supporters

In partnership with Envision Financial

PALS is a literacy program offered to parents and kindergarten children. It is designed to strengthen the connection between home and school while helping parents and caregivers support their children’s early literacy development (language, literacy, numeracy).

We have planned four – two hour sessions and one – one hour session (orientation) where participants will learn a strategy and then practice it in the classroom with their children.

Purpose of PALS

  • To continue to build on the relationship between parents and the school
  • To continue to develop parent’s confidence in supporting their child’s learning.
  • To build on early language, literacy and numeracy skills already happening in the home.

Envision Financial has committed to fund this program in Kitimat’s three public elementary schools. The Kindergarten teachers, Administrators and the First Nation’s Literacy Support Worker will all be working together to support PALS.

Families go home after each session with a ‘supply kit’ which will support the topic we have been working on.
Parents are encouraged to attend as many workshops as they are able. If you are unable to attend, please arrange for another adult to accompany your child (relative or family friend).
Session Topics consist of:

  • The Importance of Play (in conjunction with the Kindergarten Orientation)
  • Storytelling
  • Early Reading & Writing
  • Early Math
  • Celebration & Motor Skills
