Peer Supporters

Peer Supporters at Roy Wilcox SchoolWhat is the Peer Support Program?
Peer Supporters provide peer support on the playground during the recess and lunch.  Peer Supporters support students in problem solving and with resolving conflicts. Peer Supporters are visible on the play ground in their safety vests or arm bands. Peers Supporters will offer their support to students and students are also encouraged to ask for support.

Who are the Peer Supporters?
Student volunteers from in Grade 5& 6 are trained to be Peer Supporters.  They participate in a full-day retreat and have to complete 8 more 45 minute training sessions.  The Peer Support training covers communication, problem solving and conflict resolution skills

The training for this program is based on a resource developed in BC entitled Kids Helping Kids which was created by Trevor Cole.

Benefits of the program:

  1. Students will most often seek support from friends or other students when faced with some frustration, concern or problem.  This program has the potential to reach students who may not usually seek help.
  2. It is a way for students to learn how to care about others and put their caring into practice
  3. Enhancement of student leadership, self esteem and inter-personal skills
  4. Supports/creates a school climate in which people demonstrate care for each otherIf you have any further questions please ask a Roy Wilcox Peer Supporter or Jocelyn Iannarelli, Community LINK Program, Roy Wilcox Elementary;Jocelyn Iannarelli:
