Community: Girl Power!
We are looking for girls aged 10-13 to join our exciting summer group. We are recognizing that some girls this age start dropping out of sports and activities they previously enjoyed. Our goal is to encourage girls to stay active and eat well. Building self-esteem and learning to have a positive body image are also important parts of this program.
July 5-9; 10:30 am-1:30 pm Or
August 23-27; 10:30 am – 1:30 pm
Kitimat Child Development Centre, 1515 Kingfisher Avenue
Each session will consist of three parts:
• A fun activity in a supportive environment
• Cooking a healthy lunch
• Learning about your self
Girls must be willing to participate and have fun! This group would not be appropriate for girls who are already active in organized sports or other activities. If you would like more information or would like to register for this FREE program, please contact us at 250-632-3144 (ext. 24—Carolyn, ext. 30—Luiza) or by e-mail at cwatt@kitimatcdc.ca or lcouto@kitimatcdc.ca

Handout Information: Understanding Girl Bullying
The Salvaging Sisterhood Program, currently running at Roy Wilcox, had their 3rd session yesterday. Focus was on what the girls look for in a true friend and we also did a quiz entitled “Am I a Good Friend?”. These activities will help the girls gain some awareness about relationship qualities and skills, along with doing some self-reflection.
Though you may not be part of this program, all parents and guardians can gain valuable insight in this Parenting Handout on “Understanding Girl Bullying”. Please follow this link and have a look. This information is a great way to gain understanding and support your daughter with this tricky friendship aggression.

Half Mast for Mourning
Flags will be half-mast from sunrise to sunset National Day of Mourning for workers injured or lives lost in the work place
The National Day of Mourning is observed in Canada on 28 April. It commemorates workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace related hazards and incidents.
Every year, WorkSafeBC, along with the B.C. Federation of Labour and the Business Council of British Columbia, co-host a public ceremony to remember workers who have lost their lives as a result of work-related accidents or occupational diseases.
Typically the Canadian flag on Parliament Hill is flown at half-mast, and workers and employees observe this day in various ways including lighting candles, donning ribbons and black armbands, and observing moments of silence. The purpose of Day of Mourning is twofold- to remember and honour those lives lost or injured and to renew the commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace – to prevent further deaths, injuries and diseases from work.
Salvaging Sisterhood
Salvaging Sisterhood has started @ RW!
The group is titled Salvaging Sisterhood and is designed to raise awareness, develop empathy, teach healthy conflict, explore feelings, and promote a positive change in female relationship. This program also addresses the “relational aggression” that is frequently used by girls in their friendships. All grade 6 girls at Roy Wilcox are taking part in this initial group. Salvaging Sisterhood will meet for forty-five minutes, once a week, for eight weeks.
Purpose of Salvaging Sisterhood:
l Teach girls to communicate efficiently
l Raise awareness
l Develop empathy
l Teach healthy conflict
l Explore feelings
l Promote a positive change in female relationships

D.A.R.E. Graduation
Roy Wilcox Grade 5 class at their DARE Graduation Monday March 29.
DARE is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teach children how to resist peer pressure and live drug and
violence-free lives. The curriculum is taught by police officers whose training and experience gives them the background needed to answer the questions young students ask. There are many ways the DARE program benefits the community:
1. DARE “humanizes” the police, students can begin to relate to officers as people.
2. Students see officers in a helping role, not just enforcement.
3. It opens lines of communication between law enforcement and youth.
4. Officers can provide information beyond drug-related topics.
5. The program opens dialogue between the school, police and parents to deal with other issues.
Classroom Art Exhibit
Some artwork from students in the following classes are on display: Mrs. Botrokoff, Mrs. Hittel and Mrs. Vollrath.
Perhaps parents and family friends would like to visit the Museum to see their art work.
