Kindercare and Out-Of-School Memo

The Kitimat Child Development Centre has operated Kindercare and Out of School Care programs for the 2008-2009 school year. This licensed child care program in the schools provides quality child care before and after school. The program allows children to experience a wide variety of activities including art, science, gym time, out door play, health and wellness, literacy and community involvement. Care givers encourage fun and personal development including play activities with their peers.

WE ARE TRYING TO KEEP THESE LICENSED CHILD CARE PROGRAMS OPERATIONAL. It would be helpful to us to know if this service was available, would you use it? If so please contact as soon as possible to let us know./...view .pdf

The Smallest Voices

Vandalism is a horrible thing for anyone to encounter in their community; and it's a shame that even the children have to face it in their everyday surroundings such as their school. We want to share a letter written by a student of Roy Wilcox that wants to state he cares by sending out a request to the local RCMP.

Smart Thinking

SMART BoardRoy Wilcox now has one 77" SMART Board interactive whiteboards in use in the school. SMART Board is an audio-visual tool for classroom/school use. It helps teachers create lessons that engage students of all ages and learning styles; it helps energize lessons and motivate learners. Combining the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer, the interactive whiteboard lets teachers control applications by touching the screen with their finger or writing with the pen tool. Daily Physical Activity

In coordination with the Ministry of Education and Healthy Schools Roy Wilcox students are now incorporating 30 minutes of Daily Physical Activity, DPA, into their daily instruction. On Monday assembly the entire school partakes in the 30 minutes of DPA together with music and team leaders and the rest of the week the classes exercise in their classes.

Health Canada recommends that children and youth achieve 90 minutes of physical activity a day to ensure optimal growth. By offering K-9 students 30 minutes of activity daily and requiring grades 10 – 12 students to complete 150 minutes of physical activity a week, the Ministry of Education will help students fulfil that recommendation. Students are encouraged to be active for more than just the minimum daily activity time.

Out of School Care Topic

With 'Out of School Care' being a vital concern to the community of Kitimat we wanted to post the following letter from the Kitimat Child Development Centre on issues regarding If you have any questions or concerns you can contact the Kitimat CDC at 250.632.3144 or by email at: info@kitimatcdc.ca

This letter is to inform you of the service we are trying to ensure is happening in our community and asking for your support for the program. We are asking if you can encourage parents to register their children in our program and thus with full enrolment
ensure the continued viability of the program. Unfortunately if we can’t come up with some solutions we will not be able to continue to provide out of school care.

Helpful with this application, for funding, would be letters of support from the PAC parents outlining the importance of
quality licensed out of school/after school care providing a range of activities that enhance a student’s development. /... read more

Traffic Safety

Traffic safety is still an ongoing issue and we are looking at having the RCMP come and teach the children about road safety.  Also, we have a few parents who have stepped forward willing to donate their time as volunteer crossing guards.  That is great!  Thank you...However, we need at least 6 parents to step forward before the RCMP will offer a training session.  If you are able to donate anytime, please let me know ASAP.  Please remember to use the Harvest Church for pick ups and please use the CONTROLLED DESIGNATED parking lot for drop offs.  Please also avoid stopping near the crosswalks as this can block the view of a child walking across the road. The roads are getting slippery and we cannot stop as quickly.  Please be careful and take your time...Let's keep our children safe. ...posted Nov. 22/08

CARSWELL STREET RESIDENTS’ REQUEST:
Several Carswell Street families have expressed a genuine concern not only for the safety of our students, but for their RIGHT to come and go from their driveways at any time during the day.
The official pick up and drop off area for our school is the Haisla Church parking lot.

Also:
Section 189(1) of the motor vehicle act states:

  • Vehicles must not park within 6 meters of the
    approach side of a crosswalk.
  • Vehicles must not park on a crosswalk.

The fine for this is $40.

Please respect the RIGHTS of these families! Thank you for your support.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cell Phones:

Many children are being afforded the privilege of cell phones at a younger age. Surprisingly, many elementary school aged children have one. School District Policy is very clear on this issue:
"....can be disruptive to the educational environment and is not acceptable. Violation of this policy will result in disciplinary measures and confiscation of the cell phone." There is a land line telephone in almost every room at Roy Wilcox. Students need not bring a cell phone to school.

Bikes:

Please make sure to secure your bike with a good lock. There have been some thefts in the past.

Bear Aware in Kitimat BC

BEAR WATCH!

It’s that time of year again, bears may be in the area. Bears have an incredible sense of smell. They can smell garbage over great distances. When bears learn garbage means food,
they return to it again and again. This is very dangerous. These bears may expect food every time they see people.
When this happens, they become a potential threat.

SOME SAFETY TIPS:

  • Store garbage inside until pick-up.
  • Ensure bins are properly sealed.
Wash and clean cans and jars and freeze pungent wastes until pick-up day.
  • Pick fruit off trees daily as it ripens or pick it before it ripens if
you don’t intend to use it.
  • Place birdfeeders out of bear’s reach and keep the area free of
    seeds.
  • Clean barbeques after use.

DON’T:

  • put garbage outside before pick-up day.
  • Throw cooking oil or grease outside or stockpile garbage.
  • Put fish, meat, fat, oils or unrinsed eggshells in
    your compost bin.
  • Leave food or garbage in the back of a truck, not even one with a canopy.

IF A BEAR IS THREATENING, PERSISTANT OR
AGGRESSIVE, CALL THE CONSERVATION OFFICER
SERVICE AT 1-800-663-9453.
